by Harrow Borough at Earlsmead
Harrow's return to competitive action after a two week break ended in a disappointing 0-0 draw against bottom of the table side Redbridge at Earlsmead on Saturday. The visitors were clearly highly motivated for the game following the recent dismissal of their management team of Jim Stannard and Dave Martin, with Bob Ritchie handling team affairs in a caretaker capacity. For Harrow it was a below par performance, particularly in front of goal where a number of chances went begging. The break in competitive action for Harrow allowed a number of players such as Marvin Neufville, Ross Fitzsimon, Wayne Walters and Daniel Dyer time for minor injuries to clear up, thus enabling manager, Dave Howell to choose from a fully fit squad, with the exception of the long term injury victim Dean Marney. Harrow started strongly and looked particularly threatening early on but the lushness of the grass following the recent rains seemed time and again to slow the forward movement and neither Victor Asombang nor Elliot Onochie were able to escape their markers despite fluent exchanges of passes through the Harrow midfield. The visitors looked comfortable at the back and were dangerous on the break, but it was Harrow who almost broke the deadlock on 20 minutes when a superb 30 yard shot from Ross Fitzsimon beat ‘keeper O’Neal but just shaved the wrong side of the bar. Redbridge bounced back a strongly hit shot from Collins was superbly saved at full stretch by a horizontal Keita Karamoko, but the first ended with Harrow on the ascendancy and Victor Asombang shot wide after good work by Ellliot Onochie. Howell made two changes at the interval, withdrawing Daniel Dyer and James Bent and replacing them with Howard Newton and youngster Jonathan Constant – the latter much to the joy of the watching scouts - but it was the visitors who threatened first with Wattley heading over the bar when well-placed. Harrow responded and should have opened their account when, following a header from Wayne Walter which was blocked on the line, the visitors were somehow allowed to scramble the ball away despite the attention of a number of Harrow attackers. Moments later after good work by Ross Fitzsimon, a Jonathan Constant shot was well-saved low down by ‘keeper O’Neal. Harrow appeared to have valid claims for a penalty when Howard Newton appeared to be brought down in the box by O’Neal, but their pleas were waved away by Referee Toyer. At the other end Keita Karamoko got himself into some difficulty when he headed the ball across the face of his own goal and was forced to save well at the feet of Apata. As the game drew towards a conclusion, the defending of the visitors became for desperate, but Harrow were not able to break them down and the game ended as it had started with the scores level at 0-0. At the same stage last season Harrow may well have lost such a game and it is a merit of the progress made this season that they came away with a share of the spoils and were disappointed not to have picked up all three.
