| Harrow opened
their league account at Earlsmead
on Tuesday night but their delight
at a good win over Enfield was
marred by ill-discipline rearing
its ugly head with striker Richard
Goddard being sent off and bookings
for Adam Everitt, Wayne Walters
and Davis Haule.
With a suspended £5,000
Football Assocation fine set
to be imposed if last season's
poor record is not improved
it was hardly what manager Edwin
Stein was looking for in his
bid to clean up the club's act.
Goddard's dismissal 17 minutes
from time was totally unnecessary.
Enfield centre back Dave Reddington
was tucked up in the corner
and going nowhere but the big
striker's reckless challenge
went straight through him and
the red card brandished by referee
David Elstone was inevitable.
At the time Borough were grimly
holding onto a 35th minute lead
given to them when John Lawford
lashed the ball home after a
Walters cross had glanced off
the head of defender Dean Coppard
into his path, and going down
to ten men at that stage was
not what Borough wanted in the
face of mounting second half
Enfield pressure.
The visitors had already hit
the Borough crossbar with a
free kick from Stuart Maynard
and the woodwork came to the
home side's rescue again when
Paul Kyriacou's free kick cannoned
off an upright. But sound defending
from Phil Gridelet, Richard
Clarke and Dean Marney and the
safe hands of keeper Andy Pape
kept Enfield at bay and in the
84th minute the visitors were
finally killed off by a second
Borough goal, Haule bulleting
home a superb header from a
pinpoint Chris Jones corner.
