Richard
Goddard gets up above
Kingstonian's Sean Thurgood |
|
| Kingstonian,
unbeaten in the league since
the start of the season, were
the visitors and Borough were
still coming to terms with a
second half drubbing by Gray’s
Athletic on the Tuesday night
where their close control and
good passing technique had been
Borough’s downfall.
Conditions were ideal. Borough
started brightly with Richard
Goddard getting inside the penalty
area and seemingly held back
by Thurgood, this ignored by
the referee, but still managing
to hit his shot across goal
with keeper Key rooted to his
line. Then Robert Charles, jinking
through two defenders along
the right flank, came inside
but his shot was deflected for
a corner. From the short corner,
Goddard received the ball and
his centre curled into the middle
but Davis Haule’s header
sailed over the bar. Kingstonian
responded with Lampton and Tim
Sills combining well but the
end shot from Sills was stubbed
and easily saved by Keita Karamoko.
The visitors pushed up and
Wingfield left unmarked in the
Borough penalty area turned
to receive a high ball but panicked
and skied the shot over the
bar. Further shots from ex Borough
stalwart David Clarke and Lewington
saw Jimmy Aggrey do well to
head over his own bar under
pressure and then Karamoko blocking.
On 24 minutes slipshod defending
by Borough saw Clarke receive
the full from a short corner
go to the edge of the box and
lift the ball towards the far
corner where Wingfield rose
unchallenged and headed into
the top corner.
Fired up Kingstonian saw a
good interchanging move between
Wingfield, Sills and Lampton
on the right flank ending with
a diving header by Sills going
goalward towards the bottom
left corner but a lightning
reflex by Karamoko pushed it
round for a corner. Borough
responded with Phil Gridelet
advancing into the visitors'
half unmarked slipping the ball
across to the overworked Danny
Dyer who racing onto the ball
hit it with venom from 10 yards
but keeper Key advancing managed
to push the ball over the bar.
From the corner Gavin, in a
packed area, pivoted and his
shot narrowly missed the cross
bar. On 40 minutes Gridelet’s
interchanging passes with Goddard
saw him drive a powerful shot
from 20 yards into the bottom
left corner past a static keeper.
More like a cup-tie both teams
went for the win in the second
half. Clarke orchestrating the
visitors attacks got inside
Borough area beat Gridelet on
the by-line and crossed the
ball into the penalty are but
Dean Marney scrambling back
just hooked the ball as Sills
teed up. Then with Sills bearing
down towards the penalty area
Boroughs Marney racing alongside
him, tackled but it was adjudged
to be a foul. With the visitors
vans baying for a red card the
referee taking his time eventually
gave a yellow.
From the resultant free kick
Wingfield hammered into the
wall. Borough fought back as
new signing Tobi Jinadu joining
the attack received a high ball
inside Kingstonians area and
his header floated across goal
to hit the far post and bounce
out. Gridelet intercepted and
swept the ball across to Dyer
who racing in saw his shot just
miss the nearside upright. With
Lampton left in space deep in
Boroughs half saw an opportunity
to shoot from 25 yards and his
curling shot going over a crowded
area towards the top right was
superbly touched over by the
Karamoko.
He continued to thwart the
visitors' attacks as he first
dived at the feet of Wingfield
and later raced out of his area
to kick the ball off the marauding
Sills feet. Kingstonian continued
to press forward and fierce
shots from Lampton and then
Sills were stopped by Karamoko
with Jimmy Aggrey managing to
get to the loose balls on both
occasions and clearing. Then
Borough having won a free kick
in the visitors' half saw Aggrey’s
shot hit the pressured keeper
and bounce out to Gavin who
facing the wrong way hooked
the ball over his head from
15 yards into an empty net.
The visitors disputed the decision
but the goal stood.
Kingstonian looked for the
equaliser but Karamoko continued
to protect his goal with assurance.
