Adam
Everitt - double clearances
off the line |
|
| As Borough
boss Edwin Stein begins his
planning for next season, he
must know that a top priority
is to find a striker who can
put away chances. At York Road
on Tuesday evening, Harrow had
as much of the play as the hosts,
and created as many, if not
more, attempts on goal, but
woeful finishing by Borough
contrasted with crisp strikes
from the Magpies who consequently
took the three points.
An indication of what was to
come was witnessed as early
as the second minute, when Brian
Haule’s perceptive pass
sent Ross Fitzsimon through
with Barnard to beat, but the
Borough midfielder tried too
fancy an effort, which beat
Barnard but also went wide of
the post. Three minutes later,
Dean Marney spun in the home
penalty box but his shot was
blocked.
Marney was then in action at
the other end, blocking Glynn’s
effort after the home forward
had taken advantage of a slip
by Clemente Lopez. Cook then
fired over the Harrow goal from
10 yards when he should have
hit the target.
The lively game continued with
Haule beating Barnard to a through
ball only to poke the ball just
wide. Borough nearly went in
front after 22 minutes when
Marvyn Watson crossed for Pat
Gavin to power a header from
beyond the far post. Barnard
saved acrobatically, and Robert
Charles stretched to divert
the loose ball against the bar.
Charles then headed an Adam
Everitt long throw into Barnard’s
arms.
The home side went in front
after 37 minutes. Richard Clarke
was at fault with a weak clearing
header, which Cook pounced on
to drill home. Keita Karamoko
then saved well from Nartey’s
near-post effort.
Harrow should have equalised
after 43 minutes when Marney’s
pass found Charles in space
in front of goal, but with only
Barnard to beat he mis-hit his
shot.
Haule was close to equalising
soon after the break, heading
Lopez’s cross just over.
Everitt then twice rescued his
goalkeeper who had lost the
ball when venturing outside
the box, on each occasion clearing
off the line.
Borough missed another great
chance in the 58th minute, a
fine Lopez cross being mis-hit
back across the goal by Watson.
Maidenhead’s Yaku showed
the Borough players how it should
be done in the 61st minute when
he got a brief sight of goal
and fired across Karamoko into
the far corner for the second
goal.
Haule missed another chance,
taking far too long over the
ball when he needed to shoot.
Marney was then pressed into
action as a striker, and played
Charles in for an fort that
beat Barnard but was headed
off the line by Jeffrey. The
Borough central defender showed
that striking was not really
his forte when he was put clear
only for his first touch to
let him down and allow Barnard
to save. Barnard’s last-minute
save at Charles’s feet
confirmed Borough’s fourth
defeat on the trot, and third
blank scoresheet on the trot,
as they seem to be ending the
season with a whimper.
