| Battling Boro’
gained a deserved 4-3 victory
in an entertaining friendly
at Grantham Town on Saturday
last.
Manager Edwin Stein used 16
players for this trip to Lincolnshire,
allowing triallist Michael Berger
to share the goalkeeping berth
with Keith Karamoko and handing
a debut to former Newcastle
United and Darlington defender
Stuart Elliott.
Boro’ fell a goal behind
as early as the 6th minute when
former Bedford Town favourite
Kevin Slinn headed home powerfully
after being left unmarked on
the 6 yard line.
Both ‘keepers were called
upon to save well - Mario
Ziccardi from Steve Dogbe and
Keita Karamoko from Mark Paul
- before Boro’ levelled
the scores on 28 minutes. Fabio
Valenti was fouled just outside
the penalty area. Ross Fitzsimon
touched the ball into the path
of Stuart Elliott who fired
home a powerful shot into the
bottom corner of the net.
The Gingerbreads re-took the
lead on 44 minutes when Keita
fumbled a Mark Paul header,
the Assistant Referee adjudging
that the ball had crossed the
line.
The lead was short-lived however
and from the kick off Dean Cannoville
was sent tumbling in the home
penalty area - Ross Fitzsimon
stiking home the resultant penalty.
The second half began with
a cross-shot from Clemente Lopez
striking the home bar before
Boro'’took the lead for
the first time in the game.
A left wing corner from Lopez
eluded Ziccardi and Daniel Dyer
prodded home from close range.
Boro’ almost increased
their lead moments later but
Abdul Yoki had a header blocked
on the line by the home custodian.
They were made to pay on 68
minutes when a right wing corner
was touched home by Simon Dakin.
Boro’ survived a sustained
perriod of pressure and it looked
as if the spoils were to be
shared, but the visitors had
a different ideas. As the game
entered stoppage time Boro’
earned a corner on the left.
The cross was floated deep to
Richard Goddard who headed the
ball back across the face of
the goal for Dean Cannoville
to glance home the winner.
