Dean
Marney - switched from
attack to defence in first
half shake-up |
|
| Disappointment
at Nyewood Lane on Tuesday evening
as Harrow’s winless run
continued.
Harrow began with two ‘big
men’, Pat Gavin and Dean
Marney, up front, and though
Gavin laid on an early chance
for Ross Fitzsimon, blocked
by a saving tackle by Bognor’s
Hudson, it quickly became clear
that the duo were not sufficiently
mobile to pose a serious threat
nor, importantly, to put pressure
on the ball-playing Bognor back-line.
The hosts went in front on
16 minutes when a right-wing
build up ended with a cross
tucked past David Hook by Beck.
Eddie Stein made some changes
to the starting line-up after
29 minutes, removing Corey Ellis
and moving Marney back to defence,
but he chose to send on Brian
Haule as substitute rather than
joint leading scorer Abdulai
Yoki.
Though Haule worked hard, he
did not pose the threat that
Yoki was to show later on. A
Gavin header was shepherded
to safety by Price with keeper
Stoner beaten, but that was
the only serious threat from
Borough in the rest of the first
half. The hosts were little
better, Sargent’s shot
over the bar being the only
time they threatened a second
goal.
Harrow had another change around
at half-time, sending on youngster
Robbie Rix for his debut in
place of Daniel Dyer, who again
had got himself into crossing
positions but failed to deliver
the quality ball.
Price had to make a good clearance
from Richard Goddard’s
header as the half opened, but
it was Bognor who doubled their
lead in the 58th minute. Wayne
Walters brought down an attacker
just outside the box, and Michael
Birmingham curled the free kick
round the wall and into the
goal. Keeper Hook will have
been disappointed as the ball
went in on the side of the goal
he should have been covering.
It was 3-0 after 72 minutes.
Hook saved well after a bad
mistake by Stuart Elliott, but
Russell was on hand to slot
in the rebound.
However, Yoki had just arrived
on the field and, as has been
seen in previous games, he has
mobility and pace. Suddenly,
the home defenders who had been
enjoying a stroll found themselves
harried and under pressure.
Haule had a good effort tipped
round the post by Stoner.
It took Yoki just four minutes
to get on the score-sheet, diving
to head home Rix’s in-swinging
cross at the near post in the
76th minute. He was then hugely
unlucky in the 79th minute,
cutting across the penalty area
and hitting a fierce shot that
cannoned off the inside of the
post. The ball rebounded to
Elliott on the edge of the area
and his shot went inches wide.
Yoki then shot over, and had
another effort wide, as Harrow
attacked with purpose that had
been totally lacking in the
first 70 minutes. Clemente Lopez
crossed for Gavin to volley
wide, but Borough could not
get the second goal that would
have set up an exciting finish.
