David Howell reflects on cup success and the closing weeks of the season

On Tuesday night without getting in to the politics of Enfield FC it was where I lifted the FA trophy as captain in 1988 and it seemed ironic that my first piece of silverware as a football Manager would be against them.

I thought on the night my team thoroughly deserved to win and I was pleased with our performance and the discipline and professionalism my players displayed.

Even when Enfield got a little physical my players did not waver from their individual and collective task and this was epitomised by a strong defensive performance led by Wayne Walters my captain and unquestionably my player of the season.

I was pleased with how compact we looked using a five man midfield with the likes of Elliot Onochie, Howard Newton and Danny Leech allowed to break forward as often as they liked to join up with lone striker and two goal hero Brain Haule in the knowledge that Steve Dogbe and Danny McGonigle were battling away in the midfield.

I am pleased my team have something to show for their efforts this season, as it has been a difficult season and at times we did not perform as well as I would have liked and was rightly criticised however in my view there were also times that I felt some of the criticism was harsh and unnecessary and at best negative I feel borne out of frustration and disappointment.

An example of this was when I went to visit Dean Marney at Chelsea & Westminster hospital a few hours after his double knee operations and all he could talk about was his disappointment of the team losing 2-1 at home to Wealdstone a couple of days earlier.

No Harrow supporter will forget the hard time that the Wealdstone faithful gave him at Edgware. However as disappointed with the result he was also unhappy with some of the negative things written about his team mates and thought the report on our website had been written by a Wealdstone supporter…

Football is a result driven business even at this level and I am responsible for my team’s performances but I’m sure we would all like to bring back some of the old successful and glory days to HBFC.

In the club’s recent history I have been involved as a player or as a coach with most of the club’s successful periods over the last two decades and was pleased for the players and the club that we won on Tuesday night.

I know when we are winning it makes it a bit more palatable to deal with the struggles that some of the hard working Directors at the club like Peter Rogers and Eddie Driscoll are subjected to on a daily basis.

At the start of the season I was looking for as much support as possible as our resources were obviously very limited and knew it was going to be a tough challenge.

I was grateful for the support, which came from our Vice Presidents, and without them there would be no battles to fight or possible success stories to tell.

I was on the other hand though very disappointed from the lack of support and understanding from our main shirt sponsors BT Local Business as I felt at one time they were seriously looking to help put Harrow Boro back on the non-league map.

In our two-year relationship they did however manage to update our telephone system at the club and drag us kicking in to the 21st century, which I am sure, everyone working at the club using the phone system is grateful for.

At Harrow it is no different to anywhere else and it is a constant struggle raising funds but I would love to keep all of the present players but realise that this might not be possible.

In the last year I have lost senior players like Perry Norman, Clinton Lamb, Daniel Dyer, Danny Blanchette and Romain Leroux along with squad players like Jason Haniff, John Bacon and Takuro Hosaka for purely financial reasons.

It was great to see the a very quiet return on Wednesday night reserve match at Earlsmead of Jonathan Constant and Kwasi Frempong known as Charlie if only for 15 minutes.

After telephone conversations with Paul Fairclough, the England Non league Manager has rewarded Danny Leech with a call up to one of his select FA XI trial matches at Cambridge University on Sunday, which follows our last match of the season at AFC Wimbledon on Saturday.

I hope the Harrow followers have enjoyed this season and on reflection I personally think my team have done reasonably well but I definitely feel we could have done much better and achieved at least 60 plus points and maybe with a bit of luck on the injury front might have been pushing for one of those play off positions…

Congratulations again to everybody associated with Harrow Borough FC as Tuesday night was as much for you as it was for my players and their efforts throughout this season.

Finally my old Barnet, Southend and Birmingham City boss Barry Fry approached me with a view of employing my coach Ken Charlery to help work with his strikers and to assist his present coach Andy Legg for the final two weeks of the season in an attempt to achieve promotion.
King Kenny as he was fondly known at London Road I think will go some way to appeasing the Posh fans as he was a goal scoring legend.
He goes with my blessing and I wish him well and we will have to wait and see how things work out.
