Harrow
Borough's Nationwide Conference neighbours made their annual pre
season visit to Earlsmead on Tuesday night, going away with an odd
goal victory in the final minute.
Hayes
returned to the venue of their Middlesex Senior Cup final victory
(at the end of last season) and were given a tough test by the Boro'
squad, who were playing the first of two midweek friendlies this
week. Skippered by Danny Nwaokolo, in the absence of the injured
Bates and Cooper, Boro' faced a Hayes side that included two England
semi pro internationals in Gothard and Goodliffe.
Harrow
moved confidently into a 12th minute lead, when Mike Bignall intercepted
a backpass by full back Carter, rounded Gothard and netted from
a sharp angle. Gavin was to shoot wide on two occasions in the following
minutes, only for the visitors to draw level after 23 minutes, when
a mighty free kick by Watts, from inside his own half, found Flynn
drifting in on the blind side, to net a 12 yard shot.
Six
minutes later, Hayes moved in front when Stevens netted a crisp
shot, after a thrusting run by Molesley had split the home defence.
Keane had two bites at a Gavin cross, Hall shot wide from Bignall's
pass and Gavin chipped over from a Hall lay off, before Boro' drew
level again in the 40th minute. Kieron Keane played a neat one-two
with Bignall before driving an accurate shot into goal. Stevens
soon hit the Boro' bar with a free kick, but the hosts deserved
to be level at the break.
The
second half was evenly contested and not littered with substitutions,
giving the game more meaning. Boro' created some good openings,
Bignall heading wide, Hall had a deflected shot saved and then had
his shirt tugged in the box, only for the offender to go unpunished.
Excellent work by Marvin Walker gave Gavin the chance of a shot
at goal but in the end, a breakaway gave the visitors victory in
the last minute.
Another
neat one-two, this time between Asunbang and Telemaque resulted
in the latter netting a crisp shot into the top corner of Hook's
net. In the second half, the years rolled back for two Boro' debut
makers - Barry Silkman who previously played for seven Football
League clubs and John Margerrison who played for three, both of
them having had their professional careers in the 1970's!
