Avoiding
defeat for the first time in their pre-season build-up, Harrow fully
merited their draw with Nationwide League Division Three side Barnet,
at Earlsmead last night. Boro fell behind then grabbed the lead
before holding onto a share of a result.
The
match began in torrential rain, which mercifully drained away whilst
giving the pitch a speedier surface, encouraging the more skilful
players. Barnet missed two headed chances, through Canoville and
Heald, but moved into an 11 minute lead when a Briggs free kick
found McGleish in front of goal, from where he slid the ball into
the net.
Fortunately
for Boro', it only took them four minutes to level, a swift move
involving skipper John Hurlock and Otis Roberts saw Shane Small
slam a 20 yard drive into goal. The hosts were visibly buoyed by
this, Mark Xavier soon weaving his way goalwards, crossing for Roberts
to have a shot blocked. The latter went on to create Boro's second
goal, after 32 minutes, when his through ball found Kelechi Duru
who netted an accurate shot from the edge of the box.
Small
missed two shooting chances and McGleish sent a diving header over
as half time approached. However the Barnet striker equalised three
minutes into the second period, running through the centre of Boro's
defence and rounding Hook.
As
the half progressed, the full timers unsurprisingly looked stronger
- McGleish putting a header wide, with David Hook having to hold
a Strevens header, then pulling off an excellent diving save to
deny McGleish.
Forced
to defend in numbers, Boro' were pleased to see Stockley head wide
and Nwaokolo blocking a Strevens shot. However, in the closing minutes,
Vladimir Gusavac twice came close to helping his side snatch victory.
First, he turned on Walker's cross and shot just over, before he
headed on Silkman's cross to Gavin, whose pass saw Hall have a shot
blocked.
