Fielding
seven players making their Premier Division debut for the club,
Harrow fell at the first hurdle at York Road on Saturday. Despite
having their fair share of possession and territory, Boro' didn't
match the directness of their newly promoted hosts.
Starting
with an adventurous 4-3-3 line-up, the visitors ironically found
themselves under pressure, playing up the considerable slope in
the first half. David Hook was at full stretch to deflect one header,
another flew just wide of a post, then the 'Magpies' took a 16 minute
lead. Glynn squared the ball across the edge of the box for Morley
to chip an effort in off the far post. A switch in formation and
personnel by manager Eddie Stein took some time to gel, with Channell
heading wide when it was easier to score.
On
the half hour, Driscoll's corner was met with a towering header
from Croxford, to double Boro's deficit. It took good covering by
Lyons and Xavier to further deny the hosts, before Boro' brought
themselves back into the game after 43 minutes. Junior Hunter floated
a free kick into the danger area where Pat Gavin rose to plant an
accurate header home. In the closing seconds of the half, Glynn
had a goal disallowed for his fould and Duru had a long range shot
saved.
The
opening stages of the second half were evenly contested; though
both sides were surely aware that the next goal would be crucial
it took 16 minutes for this to arrive. Maidenhead moved into a 3-1
lead when a long throw, one of their major attacking weapons, was
headed on, for Glynn to force home at the far post.
Six
minutes later, a 'route-one' goal finally crushed any hopes of a
Boro' revival on the day, when a clearance from one half fell deep
in the other and Allen, marginally onside, ran on unopposed to net.
Harrow
belatedly had some chances to reduce the margin of defeat - Rose
having a shot deflected wide, Willock seeing his long range drive
saved, Xavier heading just wide and Gavin having a shot blocked
- but this performance was no better than their end of season earlier
this year, when three defeats took them to the brink of relegation.
