Boro's
record in the world's most prestigious club cup competition is ordinary
- to put it at it's highest. That is, up until this season, as we
embark on a glory trail which will have TV and the rest of the media
flocking to Earlsmead. In season 1983/4 Boro did make an impression
in the competition by reaching the second round proper. The run
began with a 9-0 demolition of Ware in a first qualifying round
tie; then Aylesbury were disposed of 2-1 after a replay.
Addlestone
were the next victims by a single goal before a momentous fourth
round qualifier saw Boro defeat a powerful Fisher Athletic 4-2 in
a replay at Earlsmead. Then down to Yeovil where Boro upset the
West Country side's supporters by winning 1-0 in the first round
proper. Boro's run was finally halted by Newport County, then a
League club, and a certain John Aldridge, when County won 3-1 at
Earlsmead.
The
closest we have got in the last decade to the 1st Round proper was
season 1993/94 when the winners of VS Rugby and Harrow were drawn
against Brentford. Boro looked well in control at Rugby and even
after the sending off of Andy Prutton we deserved the chance of
a replay after a two all draw. But Boro being Boro we managed to
lose the replay at Earlsmead.
Two
seasons ago we hammered Carshalton 8-2 on an amazing Tuesday evening
- a warm up for the Saturday visit to Langney Sports in a 3rd Round
qualifier, or so we thought. Played in a south coast gale, Boro
never came to terms with the conditions - although their keeper
made a number of outstanding saves - and were well beaten.
Last
season we had a good win at Marlow with a solid team performance
and a hat-trick from Otis Roberts. Then we journeyed to meet Worcester
City who were having a dreadful time in the League. The week before,
dozens of Worcester fans had invaded the pitch at the end of the
home game demanding the resignation of the manager. Boro managed
to gift them three goals to settle them down, before starting to
play and get back to 3-2.
Although
the panic buttons were being pressed all over the City defence after
this, they hung on to gain a deserved win. Boro's recent record
in the FA Cup, as supplied by Club historian Tony Booth, is set
out below:
